Why You’ll Love This Side Dish

As a beginner air fryer cook, I thought I’d better start with the basics. And what better way to learn is with air fryer potatoes! Can’t go wrong with potatoes, right?

The first time I tried roasting potatoes in the air fryer was by adding them to my roast pork. No oil, no salt. And the result was good—crispy, fluffy, and that moreish sensation that I love about crispy roast potatoes.

I guess the oil from my roast pork was enough to coat the potatoes to get the texture and flavours you’d want from crispy roast potatoes.

So I experimented again and worked out a great air fryer recipe for beginners to try!

Of course, I wanted something a little different, so I added a touch of sophistication using truffle salt to refine this crispy air fryer roasted potatoes recipe.

The earthy aromas floating through the room as you toss hot air fryer potatoes through the aromatic salt is so alluring! Love that it can pass for fancy side dishes or easy side dishes at the same time!

    Is The Air Fryer Healthy?

In general, air fryers use far less oil to fry or cook food. Therefore it is considered to be a healthier way of frying. However, it also depends on what you cook in the air fryer. For example, if all your ingredients are high in fat, I wouldn’t necessarily say the air fryer option is healthy.

I have tested both methods for roast potatoes, and definitely, the air fryer will use less oil for crispy outer crust. Therefore it is a healthier version than traditional roasted potatoes in the oven.

What Variety of Potatoes to Use in an Air Fryer?

Like roasting potatoes in the oven, choosing an all rounder or more starchy potatoes is best for air fryer potatoes. This will help in the roasting process and deliver a crispy outside and fluffy inside—something like a Yukon gold, russet, Dutch cream, Desiree or King Edward.

For roasted potatoes, try not to use waxy potatoes as they do not break down as well for a fluffy centre.

I used baby chat potatoes for this air fryer potato recipe as they are a great all rounder potato. They are easy to use for crispy roast potatoes as you don’t need to peel or wash them. Just slice in half or keep whole, depending on the size.

Of course, there is no need to use baby potatoes in this air fryer recipe. Choose your favourite variety. Just make sure they are similar in size when cooking.

Tips For Making Air Fryer Potatoes

A few simple tips for air fryer potatoes:

    • Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket as the potatoes will not cook properly and will not give you a crispy crust.
    • Cut similar sized potatoes.
    • Make sure you check and shake the potatoes partway through the frying process. This will allow the hot air to circulate the potatoes.
    • Add some oil to the potatoes. Cooking with no oil can cause the potatoes to stick to the basket
    • Make sure the potatoes are dry before coating with oil. Water and oil don’t mix well.

    What Is Truffle Salt?

For this air fryer recipe, I decided to season the crispy roast potatoes with something a little more than just sea salt.

Truffle salt is a concoction made by mixing traditional salts with tiny pieces of white or black truffle. Stored in an airtight jar, the pieces of truffle will permeate the salts and leave a distinctly earthy truffle flavour and aroma.

Truffle salt is often used to enhance the flavours of the dish as a finishing garnish. As truffle salt can be quite intense so try to use it sparingly.

    Recipe Overview

Flavour/Texture: Golden brown crispy crust with a hot, white fluffy inside. This is the definition of good air fryer roasted potatoes.

And the taste sensation? Well, a burst of earthy woody aroma with a punch of salty flavours. Truffle salt does not hide its flavour for sure.

Ease: I find air fryer potatoes easier than roasting in the regular oven. I normally parboil my potatoes first when roasting in the oven, which adds another step. There is no need to do that with the air fryer.

Time: Depending on how big your air fryer is, you may need to do a double batch of potatoes which will take a little longer. I was able to roast potatoes in one batch in my 3.2L / 3.4 Qt air fryer.

    Ingredients

These are the ingredients you need in air fryer potatoes with truffle salt:

Individually labelled ingredients for Air Fryer Potatoes with Truffle Salt

Potatoes: I used baby potatoes for this recipe only because I am too lazy to cut up large potatoes. You can choose to use your favourite starchy potato for this recipe.

Olive oil: Good olive oil to help the potatoes crisp. You can use any other neutral oil like vegetable or sunflower oil. As we are using an air fryer, we are using less oil than roasting in the oven.

Thyme: I used thyme because I have it in the garden, but you can use other herbs too. Try rosemary or oregano.

Truffle salt : You can purchase truffle salt from boutique food stores or delicatessens. You can also try and get it online. It is not an everyday item you use, so a small jar will go a long way.

    Variations and Substitutions

Using oven to roast potatoes: If you don’t have an air fryer, you can roast the potatoes in a preheated oven at 200°C or 400°F until golden brown. Use 4 tablespoons of oil and season as required.

Alternative roasted potato seasonings: If you don’t have truffle salt or prefer other flavours, here are some alternative seasonings to use on air fryer roasted potatoes:

    • garlic powder with mixed dried herbs
    • onion and garlic powder with a dash of paprika
    • use rosemary instead of thyme and season with sea salt
    • black pepper and sea salt
    • lemon, garlic and sage
    • chilli flakes, turmeric powder and sea salt
    • toasted cumin seeds
    • grated parmesan

    Instructions

Follow these instructions on how to make air fryer potatoes with truffle salt:

Cut potatoes in half or quarters depending on the size. Make sure they are similar sizes to ensure they cook more evenly in the air fryer. There is no need to peel the potatoes.

Place cut potatoes in a large mixing bowl. Add olive oil and thyme into a bowl.

Toss together so that potatoes are well coated with olive oil.

If required, preheat the air fryer for 3 minutes at 200°C or 400°F. Depending on your air fryer, you may or may not need to preheat the air fryer. For me, it works better when it has been preheated.

Remove the air fryer basket and add potatoes into the basket. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may need to do this in two batches.

Replace air fryer basket and fry for 15 minutes or until golden brown at 200°C or 400°F.

At the halfway mark, pull the air fryer basket out and give it a good shake so that all the potatoes are fried evenly. You may want to use the tongs to help move the potatoes, especially if they are stuck to the basket.

I tend to shake my potatoes more than once as I have a small air fryer, and I need to move the potatoes around more to get a better crisp.

Once potatoes are fork tender and golden brown (you may want to taste test!), remove from the air fryer and place in a large bowl.

Add truffle salt to potatoes and mix.

Adding truffle salt from a bowl to Air Fryer Potatoes

The amount of truffle salt you add is really up to your taste and also the quality of your truffle salt. If you like a stronger, more pungent flavour, add more. Otherwise, ½ – ¾ teaspoon should be sufficient to coat the potatoes for a lovely aroma and savoury flavour.

    Serve warm.

    How to Serve

Here are some main dishes that will go well with air fryer potatoes with truffle salt.

Great for meatless Mondays, this vegan baked mac and cheese would go down well. For a quick one pan, you can make this cast iron roast chicken in the oven and you can’t go wrong with chicken and potatoes!

Lastly, this roasted pork loin is a fool proof recipe that has a garlic and herb butter crust that makes the most delicious pan drippings.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can you put aluminium foil in the air fryer?

Yes, you can put aluminium foil in the air fryer to line the basket. However, it is not required in this recipe.

Do you parboil potatoes before air frying?

You don’t need to parboil potatoes before air frying. The air frying process can fry the potatoes quickly enough to turn golden brown and have a fluffy middle.

Can I make this recipe ahead of time?

You can make the air fryer potatoes ahead of time and then reheat in the air fryer or oven for about 5 minutes or until heated through and crispy again. Toss in truffle salt only when you want to serve.

If you have a smaller air fryer, you may want to reheat all the potatoes together when you have finished frying, so they are hot and crispy.

    How to store leftovers?

Refrigerate roast potato leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

Reheat in an air fryer or oven to serve. You can also try our Leftover Roasted Chicken and Potato Salad.

What can you use truffle salt with?

There are many different recipes you can try truffle salt with. A popular match is scrambled eggs. Truffle and eggs are a classic pairing. Using truffle salt is a slightly cheaper option than using fresh truffle.

Seared scallops or prawns will also go well with truffle salt. You can serve the seafood as is or over a plate of delicious pasta. The truffle salt will help tie it all together.

And just because you sometimes need something with a little oomph, try a sophisticated snack by adding truffle salt to French fries and popcorn.

Does truffle salt contain real truffle?

Yes, truffle salt is made with sea salt and tiny pieces of real truffle. There are generally no artificial ingredients in truffle salt.

Other truffle flavoured products like truffle oil are often infused with a synthetic chemical that makes it smell and taste like truffle.

A super easy air fryer roasted potato recipe that will impress even the toughest crowds. Crispy potatoes covered in an earthy aroma of truffle salt, I adore this potato side dish. Perfect side dishes for beef or side dishes for chicken and oh so delicious!

    That’s all!
